I approach masterwork reinterpretations in a variety of ways. "Ribbed Cave (With Uccello)" imagines that the original tableau exists within a larger, abstract landscape. In contrast to the portraits, for which I “zoom in” on the original, the larger landscapes imagine what it would be like to “zoom out”. The masterwork reinterpretations connect viewers with the experience of two different painters separated by centuries. One role the contemporary works fulfill is that of mediator between viewers and art history. This connection leads viewers to an understanding of the deep relationships artists form with works from the past.
